Instructions for Jumbo® garden thermometer
Jumbo® garden thermometer with solar lighting
PIease read these operating instructions carefully before installing and operating the jumbo thermometer.
Technical details:
- The power source consists of built-in rechargeable Ni-Cd batteries ( 6 V / 1.3 Ah ).
- The power ccmsumption is 0.72 Watts with 6 V operating voltage.
- The light source is a 4 W fluorescent tube rated for 6 V /120 mA 15 Lux at 1 foot.
- The service life of the battery is approx. 3 years.
- The service life of the fluorescent lighting tube is longer than one year when treated properly.
- The solar cell surface consists of a high power CRYSTAL solar panel.
- The solar energy pickup is approx. 1.5 W in full sunshine.
Mounting and operation:
1. Commencing operation
Before setting-up your jumbo garden thermometer, first fully charge the accumulator battery once using the
provided adapter.
2. Choice of location
The performance of the solar lamp depends greatly on the solar radiation received, therefore select a
location which is exposed to daylight and sunlight as brightly as possible. The solar panel should be
orientated as nearly horizontal as possible. The operating time of the lamp may be reduced after short
Winter days or after strongly overcast days. However, you can always still recharge the accumulator battery
with the mains adapter. When you have chosen the final location, it is advisable to fix the foot of the
thermometer with some concrete ta protect the device against theft or collapse in strong winds.
3. Switch setting
The solar section is equipped with a light sensor. In the switch setting ,AUTO' the lamp switches-on
automatically at dusk. In the switch setting ,OFF‘ the lamp does not switch on but nevertheless takes in
electric power. Always use the switch setting ,OFF' when recharging the battery with the mains adapter.
4. Subsequent charging with the mains adapter
When you wish to recharge your jumbo garden thermometer subsequently with the mains adapter, you can
easily remove the solar panel from the thermometer by holding the solar lamp at plastic lampshade and
turning the solar panel in the anticlockwise direction. Then lift-off the solar panel with the fluorescent lighting
tube, taking care not to break the latter.
Now plug the adapter into the underside of the solar panel and connect the adapter to a 220 V AC mains
power outlet. Wen plugging the charged solar panel back onto the thermometer, make sure that the solar
panel latches correctly into the lampshade.
5. Replacing the accumulator batteries and the fluorescent lighting tube
a. Fluorescent lighting tube
Take off the solar panel as described under 4. Set the switch to the ,OFF' position. Then turn the fluorescent
lighting tube through 90 degrees and pull the tube out of its socket. Insert a new tube correspondingly.
b. Accumulator battery
Release all 6 screws of the underside of the solar panel using a suitable screwdriver and then pull-off the
underside of the covering. Using a soldering iron, carefully unsolder the battery connecting wires at the
battery contacts. Solder the wires to the contacts of a new battery (6 Volts/1300 mAh). Solder the red wire to
the (+) contact and the black wire to the (-) contact. Then insert the new battery and carefully screw the
cover back on. Now charge the new battery with the mains adapter and then plug the solar panel back onto
the lampshade (Fig.2).
Important: Old batteries must onIy be disposed of by taking them to an official old battery collecting
point!
6. Fault tracing
If you have observed all points described above but your instrument nevertheless does not function
correctly, please check the following points:
