10.5 Practical energy saving advice
- Install the fridge freezer in a cool, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and heat sources;
- Do not put hot food in the fridge or freezer. Wait until food and drinks have cooled to room
temperature before putting them on the shelves/in the drawers;
- Reduce the number of times that the door(s) is/are opened and the length of time they remain open
to prevent the units from heating up excessively;
- Clean the condenser (at the back of the fridge freezer) periodically to prevent any loss of efficiency of
the appliance;
- If the fridge is unused for a long period, it is advisable to empty the appliance and turn it off.
- Thaw frozen foods in the fridge compartment in order to recover cold accumulated from the frozen
food so that it can be transferred to the fridge cell.
10.6 Practical advice and observations
- Do not keep bananas in the fridge: they are sensitive to the cold.
- Do not store cooked and pre-cooked ("instant") foods in the same container.
- Store strong-smelling foods (e.g. fresh fish, pate de foie gras and cheese) in a hermetically sealed
container.
- Frozen foods should be thawed in the fridge compartment. Foods thawed slowly preserve their
flavour better and the cold released helps top maintain the selected temperature in the fridge
compartment.
- Do not ingest the ice formed directly on the walls of the freezer compartment.
- Products will be freeze more quickly if separated into small portions.
- Leave the doors open whenever you intend to leave the appliance switched off for a long period.
10.7 Noises during operation
The fridge freezer cools by means of a compression system. To maintain the selected temperature
inside the units, the compressor starts to function and, depending on the cooling level requested, it may
function continuously if need be. When the compressor starts to function, it creates a buzzing, bubbling
or humming noise, which generally diminishes in intensity after a few minutes. Another sound linked to
the normal operation of the fridge is a gurgling noise resulting from the movement of coolant within the
coolant loop tubes. This noise is normal and does not indicate an appliance malfunction. Stronger
sounds, like blasts or snaps may be heard for a short time while the compressor of the refrigerator is
starting up. If it becomes too loud, this may mean that there are other causes. Checks must then be
made to ensure that:
- the fridge freezer is level on the floor and the compressor does not vibrate during operation: if this is
not the case, adjust the feet provided;
- The drawers, shelves and trays on the door are positioned correctly in their holders: if they are not,
put them in correctly;
- Bottles and containers in the various shelves/drawers are placed in a stable manner and are
not in contact with each other: otherwise, the vibration resulting from the compressor's operation
could cause a certain amount of noise;
- Do not place the fridge in such a way that it is in contact with furniture or other household
appliances.
10.8 Identifying and eliminating any operating faults
