Tock-Poker - The Game
The aim
The aim of Tock-Poker is to learn how to play poker. By making smart use of the
information which you can read from the symbols on the backs of the cards, you
can learn to assess what your best possible hand is. By comparing your hand to
those of the other players, you can improve your insight into the game of poker.
As with Texas Hold’em, in Tock-Poker you have to make the best possible combi-
nation of cards. This is called a ‘hand. As with Texas Hold’em, a hand consists of
the highest possible combination of fi ve cards chosen from two personal cards
(‘Hole Cards’ or ‘Down Cards’) and the fi ve cards (‘Community Cards’) which are
visible and available to everyone.
It is therefore important that you learn the combinations. These are explained in
the ‘Ranking of Poker Hands’ chapter, which comes later on in these rules.
How to play
Before the cards are dealt, the player left of the dealer must place a previously
agreed ‘ante’ bet. This position is referred to as the ‘Small Blind’. The player to
the left of the Small Blind position must place a bet which is twice as much as the
Small Blind. This is known as the ‘Big Blind’. These two bets ensure that there are
always chips to be won.
The play then proceeds differently from Texas Holdem. After the two players to
the left of the dealer (the Small Blind and the Big Blind) have placed their antes,
each player is dealt two personal cards ‘closed’ (face down). These are dealt
clockwise, one by one. The fi rst player to be dealt a card is the player to the left of
the Dealer (at the Small Blind position). The dealer then deals the fi ve community
cards face down on the table. Each player is allowed to look at his/her individual
cards, but must place them face down next to one another on the table, visible to
the other players. The fi rst betting round now starts.
TIP: Now that all the cards are on the table, it is a good moment to have a look at
what cards are in play. The symbols on the backs of the cards provide an indication
of the hands which you and the other players might have. By combining the sym-
bols on the fi ve community cards with your two personal cards, you can determine
what the highest possible hand could be.
Remember that a hand consists of fi ve of the seven cards available in total. Obvi-
ously you do not know the exact values of the fi ve community cards. But by paying
careful attention, you can estimate how your hand compares to those of your op-
ponents.
