Safe Operation Practices for Ride-On Mowers
IMPORTANT: THIS CU'I-FINGMACHINE IS CAPABLEOF AMPUTATINGHANDSANDFEET ANDTHROWING OBJECTS. FAILURE
TO OBSERVETHE FOLLOWINGSAFETY INSTRUCTIONS COULD RESULTIN SERIOUS INJURYOR DEATH.
I. Training
Reedtheinstructionscarefully.Befamiliarwiththecontrols
andthe properuseof the equipment.
Neverallow childrenorpeopleunfamiliarwiththeinstruc.
tionstousethelawnmower.Localregulationsmayrestrict
theage oftheoperator.
Nevermowwhilepeople,especiallychildren,orpetsare
nearby.
Keepinmindthat theoperatororuseris responsiblefor
accidentsor hazardsoccurring to other peopleor their
property.
Do notcarrypassengers.
Alldriversshouldseekandobtainprofessionalandprac-
ticalinstruction.Such instructionshouldemphasize:
- the need for care and concentrationwhen working
withride-onmachines;
- controlof a ride-onmachinesliding on a slopewill
notbe regainedbythe applicationofthebrake.
The mainreasonsfor lossofcontrolare:
a) insufficientwheelgrip;
b) beingdriventoofast;
c) inadequatebraking;
d) thetypeofmachineisunsuitableforitstask;
e) lack of awareness of the effect of ground
conditions,especiallyslopes;
f) incorrecthitchingand loaddistribution.
ll.Preparation
Whilemowing,alwayswearsubstantialfootwear andlong
trousers.Do notoperate the equipmentwhenbarefoot
orwearingopensandals.
Thoroughlyinspectthe area where theequipmentis to
beusedand removeallobjectswhichmay bethrownby
themachine.
WARNING - Petrolis highlyflammable.
- Storefual in containersspecificallydesignedfor this
purpose.
Refueloutdoorsonlyand do notsmokewhile refu-
eling.
- Add fuel beforestartingthe engine. Never remove
thecap ofthe fuel tankoraddpetrolwhiletheengine
isrunningorwhenthe engineishot.
- If petrolisspilled,do notattempttostarttheengine
butmovethe machineawayfromthe areaofspillage
and avoidcreatingany sourceof ignitionuntilpetrol
vaporshavedissipated.
Replaceallfuel tanksandcontainer capssecurely.
Replacefaultysilencers.
Before using,always visuallyinspect to see that the
blades,bladeboltsandcutterassemblyare notwornor
damaged. Replacewornor damaged bladesand bolts
insetsto preservebalance.
Onmulti-bladedmachines,takecareasrotatingoneblade
can cause otherbladestorotate.
IlL Operation
Do not operate the engine in a confinedspace where
dangerouscarbonmonoxidefumescancollect.
Mowonlyindaylightor ingoodartificiallight.
Beforeattemptingtostarttheengine,disengageallblade
attachmentclutchesandshiftintoneutral.
Do notuse onslopesofmorethan10°.
Rememberthereisnosuchthingasa"safe"slope.Travel
ongrassslopesrequiresparticufarcare.Toguardagainst
overturning;
- donotstoporstartsuddenlywhengoingupordown-
hill;
- engageclutchslowly,alwayskeepmachineingear,
especiallywhentravelingdownhill;
- machinespeedsshouldbe keptlow onslopesand
duringtightturns;
- stay alert for humpsand hollowsand otherhidden
hazards;
- nevermowacrosstheface oftheslope,unlessthe
lawnmowerisdesignedfor thispurpose.
Usecarewhenpullingloadsorusingheavyequipment.
- Useonlyapproveddrawbarhitchpoints.
- Limitloadstothoseyoucansafelycontrol.
- Do notturn sharply.Usecare whenreversing.
- Use counterweight(s)or wheelweightswhen sug-
gestedinthe instructionhandbook.
Watchoutfor trafficwhencrossingor near roadways.
Stopthe bladesfrom rotatingbeforecrossingsurfaces
otherthangrass.
When usingany attachments,neverdirectdischargeof
materialtowardbystandersnor allowanyonenear the
machinewhileinoperation.
Never operate the lawnmowerwith defectiveguards,
shieldsorwithoutsafetyprotectivedevicesinplace.
Donotchangetheenginegovernorsettingsoroverspeed
theengine.Operatingtheengineatexcessivespeedmay
increasethehazard ofpersonalinjury.
Beforeleavingtheoperator'sposition:
- disengagethe powertake-offand lowertheattach-
ments;
- changeintoneutraland settheparkingbrake;
- stoptheengineand removethe key.
Disengagedrive to attachments,stopthe engine,and
disconnectthesparkplugwire(s)orremovetheignition
key
- before cleaningblockagesoruncloggingchute;
- beforechecking,cleaningor workingon the lawn-
mower;
- afterstrikinga foreignobject.Inspectthelawnmower
for damageand make repairsbeforerestartingand
operatingtheequipment;
if the machinestartsto vibrateabnormally(check
immediately).
Disengagedrivetoattachmentswhentransportingornot
in use.
Stop the engine and disengage drive to attachment
- before refueling;
before removing the grass catcher;
before making height adjustment unless adjustment
can be made from the operator's position.
