Table 1: Diagnosis of malfunctions
Problem
A. Smoky air / smoke
blowback

Remedy
1. Open a skylight or slightly open a window to
supply fresh air; if possible, switch off the
cooker hood.
2. Have the flue duct inspected/cleaned
1. Use properly dried wood (3.1)
2. Allow the fire to burn through better:
2.1 use smaller kindlings
2.2 leave the air supply slide fully open for
longer
2.3 leave at least 2 cm of ash (3.4)
3. See Tabel 2 for using the recommended
amount of wood.
1. Allow the fire to burn through better by
temporarily opening the primary air supply.

2.1 have the duct inspected.
2.2 allow the fire to burn through better by
opening the primary air supply.

2.1 kindlings are too big;
2.2 primary air supply is closed too
quickly
2.3 there is too little ash on the fire
bottom
3. load is too large
1. Incomplete combustion
1. Moist wood.
2. Poorly draughting flue duct
3. Too little air supply
1. Overload by exceeding max.
