Waar komt het spel roulette vandaan?
Over de oorsprong van roulette doen vele verhalen
de ronde. De geschiedenis van het spel gaat terug
naar de 10e eeuw. Uit deze eeuw zijn in de Kaukasus
perkamenten gevonden waaruit de huidige nummer-
volgorde van roulette is af te leiden.
Roulette in zijn oervorm zou in de 14e eeuw zijn uit-
gevonden door een Chinese monnik en zou naar
Europa zijn gebracht door een jezuïetenmissionaris.
In tegenstelling tot de heersende opvatting is de
Franse wiskundige Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) in
ieder geval niet de uitvinder. Hij heeft weliswaar een
van de eerste wetenschappelijke bijdragen geleverd
tot de waarschijnlijkheidsberekening, maar er is
geen rechtstreeks verband tussen hem en het
roulettespel.
Eind 17e eeuw duikt een primitieve vorm van het
roulettespel voor het eerst op in Italië. Aangezien er
destijds een verbod was op kansspelen, werd er
door de aristocratie illegaal gegokt in elkaars villa’s
(casini). Zo werd het Italiaanse woord casino (huisje)
al snel gebruikt als benaming voor een plek waar
edelen en hoge geestelijken zich konden vermaken.
