Appendix D: Glossary VoicePrism User Manual
Momentary: a toggle switch which is only on while pressed
Ovf (Overflow): a condition that introduces distortion into an audio signal
Pan: relative loudness in stereo left and right channels that provides the spatial location of
the sound. (Also: a Greek god of pastures, flocks, and shepherds usually represented
as having the legs, horns, and ears of a goat)
Parameter: can be adjusted to different settings to affect your sound
Phantom Power: toggled On/Off by the 48V button, this provides power for your condenser micro-
phone
Ping Pong: describes a sound that “bounces” between the left and right channel of a stereo mix.
Pitch: see "Frequency"
Pitch Recognition: an algorithm that recognizes the absolute musical pitch of an audio input
Portamento: carrying on the tone from note to note without gaps.
Preset: a stored collection of parameters
Regeneration: feedback, repetition of sound
Reverb: echo
Scoop: bending up to the correct pitch from a pitch below
Semitone: the smallest difference between each whole note (e.g. from C to C#)
Sibilant: the non-voiced portion of speech i.e. "sssst" sounds
SysEx: System Exclusive: a method of communicating with MIDI devices, unique to each
manufacturer
Thicken: creates a double-tracking effect, usually accomplished by doubling with a slight pitch
offset
Timing: rhythm, meter, beat -- whatever you stamp your feet to ( also: leaving just before the
check comes, arriving just after your buddies return from the liquor store).
TRS: acronym -- tip/ring/sleeve, a balanced, 1/4" connector
Vibrato: fluctuation of pitch: tremolo
Wet: affected sound (usually referring to the amount of Reverb)
