Die U.S.S. Iowa gehörte zu den größten und schnellsten
Schlachtschiffen der amerikanischen Flotte im 2. Weltkrieg und
wurde Anfang 1943 fertig gestellt. Noch im selben Jahr brach-
te sie den Präsidenten Roosevelt nach Casablanca. Ab 1944 im
Pazifikkrieg eingesetzt, konnte sie durch ihre massive Feuer -
kraft und die perfekte Radaranlage sämtliche japanische
Angriffe abwehren und spielte eine zentrale Rolle bei der
Schlacht um die Philippinen. Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg tat sie im
Korea- und Vietnamkrieg Dienst. Die endgültige Außerdienst -
stellung erfolgte 1990.
The U.S.S. Iowa, completed at the beginning of 1943, was one
of the largest and fastest warships in the American fleet in
World War II. In that same year she brought President Roose -
velt to Casablanca. From 1944 she served in the War in the
Pacific, where her massive fire power and perfect radar system
enabled her to withstand all Japanese attacks and she played
a central role in the Battle in the Philippines. After World War II
she served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. She was finally
retired from service in 1990.
