U.S.S. INTREPID (CV-11) 1944
05108-0389 2011 BY REVELL GmbH & Co. KG PRINTED IN GERMANY
U.S.S. INTREPID (CV-11) 1944 U.S.S. INTREPID (CV-11) 1944
Japans.

The USS Intrepid (CV-11) was the third US aircraft carrier of the Essex Class to be
completed. In the Second World War she was the US aircraft carrier to score the
most hits in the Pacific. NASA then used the ship as the main recovery vessel in
the Mercury and Gemini Programme until she was used in the Vietnam War.
Since 1982 she has lain at anchor as a museum ship in New York harbour and cur-
rently houses the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum.
By 1950 the US Navy had 24 ships of the Essex Class in service. Since 1941 five
shipyards on the east coast of the United States produced the aircraft carriers in
a period of 13-20 months. The building costs of an Essex carrier lay between 68
and 76 million US dollars. The USS Intrepid was first used in war in January 1944
in the battle off the Marshall Island Kwajalein. In the subsequent operation
against the Japanese base on the Truk atoll the hull and rudder were damaged
by an aircraft torpedo. After repairs at the San Francisco shipyard, in June the
ship returned to Pearl Harbor. On 25
th
October, the deck was penetrated by a
kamikaze bomb off Leyte. The Intrepid was enveloped in smoke from burning
fuel when a few minutes later a second hit exploded in the hangar deck. It took
3 hours to get the fires under control. The seriously damaged carrier arrived at
San Francisco for repairs on 20
th
December. Aircraft from the Intrepid partici-
pated in the sinking of the Yamato on 7
th
April 1945. On 16
th
April the ship was
again hit by a kamikaze plane. After a period in the San Francisco shipyard, CV-
11 reached the Japanese island of Eniwetok one week after Japan capitulated.
