Das Sd. Kfz. 9 schwerer Zugkraftwagen 18 t ist eine der
bekanntesten, deutschen Zugmaschinen des 2. Weltkriegs. Die
endgültige Aushrung wurde von 1939-44 mit einer
Stückzahl von ca. 2.500 Einheiten bei den Fahrzeug- und
Motorenwerken (FAMO) in Breslau gebaut. Es wurde zur
Bergung von Panzern und zum Transport von schwerer
Artillerie und sperrigen Gütern aller Art eingesetzt. Der 12-
Zylinder Motor von Maybach leistete 250 PS und machte das
8,30m große Ungem zur srksten Zugmaschine der
Wehrmacht. Besonders die Feldinstandsetzungstrupps kon-
nten auf das starke Halbkettenfahrzeug nicht verzichten.
Besonders ab 1942, als erstmals der Tiger I eingesetzt wurde,
war die Zugmaschine wichtiger denn je, weil für diesen schw-
eren Panzer immer drei und mehr Halbketten zur Bergung
benötigt wurden. Für den Straßentransport von schwerem
Gerät wurde möglichst der Sonder Anhänger 116 benutzt. Für
den Werkstattbetrieb gab es zwei Ausführungen mit einem
Kran auf der Pritsche, eine mit einem 6t Kran und einen ben-
zin-elektrisch angetriebenen Kran mit der erstaunlichen
Hubkraft von 10t. Wegen der angestiegenen Gewichte der zu
bergenden Panzer schweißten die Besatzungen oft zusätzliche
Stahlplatten und Stoßstangen vor oder an die Zugvor-
richtungen. Die Watfähigkeit betrug 80cm und die Zuladung
war mit 2,87t angegeben.
The Sd. Kfz. 9 18 t heavy recovery vehicle is one of the best
known German towing vehicles of World War II. The final ver-
sion was built at the Fahrzeug- und Motorenwerken (FAMO)
in Breslau where about 2,500 units were made between 1939
and 1944. It was used for recovering tanks and transporting
heavy artillery and bulky goods of all kinds. The 12-cylinder
Maybach engine developed 250 hp and made the 8.30 m long
monster into the heaviest tractor used by the German Army.
The field repair troops in particular could not have managed
without this heavy half-track.
After 1942 in particular, when the Tiger I first came into use,
this towing vehicle was more important than ever, because
three or more half-tracks were always needed to recover this
heavy tank. For transporting heavy equipment by road the
Sonder 116 trailer was used as far as possible. For workshop
operations there were two versions with a crane on the
flatbed, one with a 6 tonne crane and a petrol-electric crane
with an astonishing lifting power of 10 tonnes. Due to the
increasing weight of the tanks needing to be recovered the
crews often welded additional steel plates and bumper bars in
front of or onto the drawgear. It had a fording capability of 80
cm and the useful load was stated as 2.87 tonnes.
