Schnellboot GEPARD-Klasse 143 A Fast Attack Boat GEPARD-Klasse 143 A
In order to achieve optimum combat capability in sea areas
with shallow water and limited space, particularly manoeu-
vrable vessels are needed. With ten fast attack craft of the
Gepard Class the 7th Fast Attack Squadron of the German
Navy has highly-technical weapons systems that meet these
requirements. The units stationed at Warnemünde are Fast
Attack Craft of the Gepard Class that were built by the Lürssen
shipyard in 1982-84 and are a development of the Albatros
Class. In cases of conflict they will be used for patrolling and
monitoring sea areas and for protecting shipping, coastlines
and sea transport. These fast craft have wooden hulls and are
equipped with four MM 38 Exocet surface-to-surface missiles,
one GDC RAM surface-to-air missile system and one 76 mm
OTO Melara gun. In addition these fast attack craft have a
wide-ranging mine laying capability. They have a displacement
of 391 tonnes and, driven by 4 diesel engines, can reach a max-
imum speed of about 40 knots. The crew consists of 34 men
(4 officers). The fast attack craft that are currently in service
with the German Navy will probably remain there until 2021.
Since 2006 four Gepard Class fast attack craft have been in use
with UNIFIL off the coast of Lebanon. Together with other
nations the Lebanese government is supported in securing its
maritime frontiers against illegal weapons imports.
