Soviet Battle Tank T-80B
03104-0389 2008 BY REVELL GmbH & CO. KG PRINTED IN GERMANY
Soviet Battle Tank T-80B Soviet Battle Tank T-80B

12,7mm NSVT MG
The Soviet battle tank T-80, a parallel model to the T-72, is the succes-
sor to the innovative but accident-prone T-64. With this further devel-
opment the Soviet military command aimed to improve its capability
without the weaknesses of its predecessors. For this reason not only
the cannon but also many detail solutions were retained, giving the
early versions of the T-80 strong similarities to their predecessor.
However the main difference was the first use in a tank of the gas tur-
bine instead of the diesel engine. Due to its capacity of almost 1000 hp
(724 kW) and relatively low weight, the T-80 is highly mobile and capa-
ble of firing guided missiles from the cannon. The 125 mm smooth
bore cannon is loaded automatically as in the previous version, so that
only a three-man crew is needed. The commander also has available to
him a 12.7 mm NSVT MG. The skirts made of armoured fabric to pro-
tect the torsion bar suspension and the cylinder mounted on the rear
of the turret to hold a snorkel are conspicuous features. After a small
initial series, greater numbers of the T-80B were built and used prima-
rily by the Western Group of the Soviet forces with whom it left
Germany between 1991 and 1994. Although new versions (T-80U) or
upgrades (T-80BV) were already quickly available, the earlier T-80 ver-
sion remained in use for a long time with the armed forces of Russia
and other former states of the Soviet Union.
