PzKpfw II Ausf. F
03229-0389 2008 BY REVELL GmbH & CO. KG PRINTED IN GERMANY
PzKpfw II Ausf. F PzKpfw II Type F
schiedenen Ausführungen (A - L) fortgeführt wurde.
1941 baute man insgesamt 233 PzKpfw II Ausf. F.
Originally intended as a training vehicle, delays in the production of
the first German main battle tanks – PzKpfw III and IV – led to the use
in combat of the armoured fighting vehicle II as a temporary stopgap
solution. After 3 years in development, series production finally start-
ed in 1937 and continued in various versions (A – L) until 1942. A con-
tinuous programme of improvements and the reliability of the vehicle
gave rise to its successful use in Poland and France at the beginning of
the Second World War. However during the war it soon became appar-
ent that the PzKpfw II was inferior to enemy tank developments.
Despite that it still saw service in the Russian steppes and the North
African deserts. The “F” version developed from March 1941 had rein-
forced 35 mm front and 30 mm side armour. With its 9.5 tonne weight
this tank reached a speed of 40 km/h. The “F” version in particular prof-
ited from the decision to build up the tank divisions to 36. In fact, it
was barely suitable for the front, but as it was cheap and quick to
build, this target could be achieved with the PzKpfw II type F. This was
considerably simpler than developing a new model with the risk of
slowing down production. In 1941 a total of 233 of the PzKpfw II Type
F were built.
