LEOPARD 2A6 /A6M LEOPARD 2A6 /A6M
Minenschutz nochmals besonders hervorsticht.
Interessenten. Die Kanadische Armee, die eigentlich alle Kampfpanzer abschaf-
fen wollte, änderte aufgrund des Afghanistan-Einsatzes ihren Plan. 20 Leopard
2A6M sind seit 2007 aus Bundeswehrbeständen entliehen, modifiziert worden
und im kanadischen Einsatz. Dabei bewies der zusätzliche Minenschutz überzeu-
gend seine Wirkung. Explosionen, die andere Fahrzeuge in Stücke gerissen hät-
ten, führten maximal zur Verwundung des Fahrers. Kein Besatzungsmitglied kam

From 2001 the German Army was equipped with the Leopard 2A6 which, as an
improvement over the Leopard 2A5, had a gun (L55) that was 1.3 m longer
which, in combination with new munitions, can be regarded as the most pow-
erful in the world. Only three years later the first Leopard 2A6M with improved
anti-mine protection was delivered to the German Army. Of 225 Leopard 2A6s,
70 received this additional protection. This gave the German Army a vehicle,
based on the successful, reliable and high-performance Leopard 2 family, that
took a worldwide lead and was particularly outstanding in the fields of effec-
tiveness and mine protection.
The Leopard 2, despite its age (first vehicle delivered in 1979) is still a model in
great demand. 16 nations have had new ones built or have taken over surplus
stock from other countries. New customers are still showing interest. The
Canadian Army, who actually wished to get rid of all their battle tanks, changed
their plans due to their operations in Afghanistan. Since 2007, 20 Leopard 2A6Ms
have been borrowed from German stock, modified and are in Canadian use. The
additional mine protection proved particularly effective. Explosions, which would
have had broken other vehicles to pieces, at worst only wounded the drivers. No
crew member was killed. This experience caused them to buy more of the
Leopard 2.
During the improvements and upgrades to combat effectiveness introduced
over the years, the weight increased by about 7 tonnes, mainly due to the
armour, however it was possible to maintain the manoeuvrability as a prominent
feature. Basically the Leopard 2 is designed as a weapons system that is easy to
operate. Although numerous types of munitions are available throughout the
world, the German Army still follows the two type principle. In cases of damage
to the drive unit, this can be replaced in 20 minutes provided that a “Buffel”
armoured recovery vehicle and a spare power unit are available. While the battle
tank can return to take part in the battle, the repair personnel can deal with the
damaged power unit.
At present the following nations use the Leopard 2 in a variety of versions (in
order of introduction): Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, Denmark,
Austria, Norway, Poland, Finland, Greece, Turkey, Chile, Singapore, Portugal,
Canada.
