German
heavy gun 17cm Kanone18“
in Heavy
Howitzer Carriage
03176-0389 2009 BY REVELL GmbH & CO. KG PRINTED IN GERMANY
Schwere deutsche „17cm Kanone 18“ German heavy gun „17cm Kanone 18“
Feuerstellung.
Muzeum Wojska Polskiego in
Warschau, Polen
für die freundliche Unterstützung zur
Realisierung dieses Projektes.
Appeared in 1942, the „17cm Kanone 18“ was, with the „21cm
Mörser 18“ the mainstay of the German heavy artillery during
WW2. It was used by units composed of 3 batteries to three
guns each. The carriage was nearly the same as the „21cm
Mörser 18“, with slight modifications, fitted with a double
action recoil brake, acting on the tube and on the upper car-
riage. To set the gun in battery, the base plate was lowered
and the enormous recoil shock was contained with spades.
The wheels were lifted and the limber was removed. The pivot
contained in the base plate allowed a 360°orientation in firing
position. With an elevation range between and +50° and
the 8.529 mm tube, it fired a 62,8 kg HE shell at the maximum
range of 28.000 metres. The total transport weight was 23.375
kg, the weight in firing position dropped to 17.520 kg without
limber. Usually transported in two parts, for quick changes of
position, the gun could be moved in one single piece, usually
behind an S
d.Kfz.9 FAMO“ tractor. The main negative point
was the relative short live of the tube, which was restricted to
1.500 shots.
We thank the
Muzeum Wojska Polskiego in Warsaw, Poland
for their kind assistance with the execution of this project.
