F-14A BLACK TOMCAT F-14A BLACK TOMCAT
Die zweisitzige F-14 Tomcat wurde als Langstrecken-Jagdflugzeug mit
schwenkbaren Tragflächen entwickelt und sollte die altehrwürdige
McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom im Dienst der US Navy ersetzen,
nachdem das F-111B-Programm von General Dynamics gestoppt wor-
den war. Aufgrund ihres leistungsfähigen Suchradars ist die Tomcat in
der Lage, 24 Ziele gleichzeitig zu erfassen und dabei sechs davon mit
ihren einzigartigen AIM-54 Phönix-Raketen anzugreifen. Weitere
Waffenelemente sind AIM-7 Sparrow und AIM-9 Sidewinder Luft-
Luft-Lenkraketen sowie eine eingebaute 20-mm-Kanone. Der Protoyp
flog im Dezember 1970 zum
ersten Mal, rasch gefolgt von verschiedenen Test- und Erprobungs-
flugzeugen, von denen einige an die Test- und Bewertungseinheit VX-
4 der Navy überstellt wurden. Die ersten Einsatzstaffeln („Squadrons“),
die Flugzeuge des Typs F-14A erhielten, waren im Jahr 1973 die VF-1
und VF-2. Die frühen F-14A-Maschinen litten unter einem leistungss-
chwachen Antrieb, so dass 1984 beschlossen wurde, den Typ F-14B
sowie verbesserte F-14As mit General Electric F110-Turbofan-Trieb-
werken auszustatten, wobei der letztgenannte Typ als F-14A(Plus)
bekannt ist. Kontinuierliche Verbesserungen der Avionik- und
Waffensysteme und des Antriebs führten zur F-14D „Super“ Tomcat.
Die Tomcat diente bei 29 Einsatzstaffeln der US Navy und war über
viele Jahre eines der leistungsstärksten Jagdflugzeuge der Welt. Sie
werden jedoch bereits nach und nach durch neuere Versionen der F/A-
18 Hornet ersetzt. Dieser Bausatz zeigt das spezielle schwarze
Farbschema, das im Jahr 1990 für eine kurze Zeit die F-14A „Vandy
One“ der Navy-Einheit VX-4 (später in VX-9 umbenannt) auf dem
NAS-Stützpunkt Pt. Mugu erhielt.
Mit dem weiteren beiliegenden Farbschema kann eine bunte
Standardmaschine der Einheit VF-142 dargestellt werden. Die F-14A
wird von zwei Pratt & Whitney TF30-P-414A Turbofan-Triebwerken mit
einem Schub von je 9.480kg (20.900 lb. bzw. 93,0 kN) mit Nachbrenner
angetrieben und erzielt so eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 2.485
km/h (1.544 mph). Die Tragflächenspannweite beträgt bei nicht
zurückgepfeilten Tragflächen 19,54m (64 ft. 1,5 in.) und gepfeilt 11,65
m (38ft. 2,5 in.). Länge: 19,10m (62 ft. 8 in.), Höhe: 4,88m (16 ft. 0 in.)
The two-seat F-14 Tomcat was designed as a long range ‘swing-wing
fighter to replace the venerable McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom in
U.S. Navy service, following cancellation of the General Dynamics F-
111B programme. Equipped with a powerful search radar, the Tomcat
is capable of simultaneously tracking 24 targets and attacking six of
them using its unique AIM-54 Phoenix missiles. It also carries AIM-7
Sparrow and AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air guided missiles, as well as a
built-in 20mm cannon. The prototype first flew in December 1970, and
was quickly followed by several test and evaluation aircraft, some of
which went to the Navy’s test and evaluation unit VX-4. The first two
operational squadrons, VF-1 and VF-2, both received F-14As in 1973.
Early F-14As were underpowered and in 1984 it was decided that
General Electric F110 turbofans would be installed in the F-14B and
upgraded F-14As, the latter type being known as the F-14A(Plus).
Progressive improvements to the avionics, weapons systems and
engines led to the F-14D ‘Super’ Tomcat. Tomcats have served with 29
operational U.S. Navy squadrons and proved to be one of the world’s
most potent fighter aircraft for many years; they are gradually being
replaced by later versions of the F/A-18 Hornet. This kit features the
special overall black scheme applied briefly in 1990 to F-14A ‘Vandy
One’ of the Navy unit VX-4 (later VX-9) at NAS Pt. Mugu; the option-
al scheme is for a colourful standard squadron aircraft of VF-142. The
F-14A is powered by two Pratt & Whitney TF30-P-414A turbofans each
rated at 9,480kg (20,900 lbs/93.0kN) with afterburner, giving it a top
speed of 2,485km/h (1,544mph). The unswept wing span is 19.54m
(64ft 1.5in.), and 11.65m (38ft 2.5in.) swept. Length is 19.10m (62ft 8in.)
and the height 4.88m (16ft 0in.)
