Der Brückenlegepanzer Biber auf Basis des Fahrgestells des Kampfpanzers
Leopard 1 wurde 1973 bei der Truppe eingeführt. Die flach auszulegenden
(freier Vorbau) Brückenteile boten gegenüber dem bisherigen System der
Scheren- oder Klappbrücke beim M48 eine flache Silhouette, die nicht
schon auf weite Entfernungen den Brückenschlag ankündigten. Binnen 2-3
Minuten kann der Biber ein Hindernis von 20 Metern überbrücken, das
Aufnehmen dauert wenig länger. Für breitere Hindernisse können auch 2
Brücken überlappend aufeinander gelegt werden. Die 2 Mann Besatzung
(Fahrer und Kommandant) können aus dem Panzer den gesamten Vorgang
steuern und sind dadurch gut geschützt. Der Panzer wiegt komplett ca. 45
Tonnen, wobei auf die Brücke alleine ca. 10 Tonnen entfallen. Aufgrund des
langen Einsatzzeitraumes sind verschiedene Bemalungen möglich. Ältere
Fahrzeuge und Brücken wurden komplett in gelboliv gespritzt. Ab 1984
wurde der dreifarbige Tarnanstrich bestehend aus teerschwarz, lederbraun
und bronzegrün eingeführt, wobei viele Brücken auch schlicht bronzegrün
lackiert wurden. In der Übergangszeit waren fast alle Farbkombinationen
möglich, auch heute noch werden oft gelbolive Ersatzteile aus den Depots
ausgegeben oder von ausrangierten Fahrzeugen übernommen. Zwischen
1973-75 wurden 105 Brückenpanzer Biber und 124 Panzerschnellbrücken
aus Aluminium beschafft. Nominell ist die Brücke bis 50 Tonnen ausgelegt,
in Ausnahmefällen sind auch MLC 60 Fahrzeuge in der Lage die Brücke zu
nutzen.
Der Dingo 1 wurde zum besseren Schutz der Soldaten während des
Auslandseinsatzes u.a. im Kosovo und Afghanistan beschafft. Das sehr
geländegängige Fahrzeug basiert auf dem Fahrgestell des Unimog und bie-
tet Schutz gegen Infanteriemunition mit Hartkerneinlage und Artillerie -
splitter. Ein V-förmiger Deflektor am Unterboden leitet den Explosions -
druck einer Mine zum großen Teil um die Karosserie herum und bietet der
Besatzung im Inneren sogar Sicherheit gegen Panzer abwehr minen. Der
Dingo bietet Platz für 5 Soldaten und ist mit Klimaanlage, Standheizung,
Reifendruckregelanlage, ABS, Rückfahrkamera, GPS-Navigationseinrichtung
und Funkanlage ausgerüstet. Die Lafette auf dem Dach ist unter Panzer -
schutz bedienbar und je nach Auftrag mit Maschinengewehr oder Granat -
maschinenwaffe auszurüsten. Der Motor des Unimog U1550 leistet 240 PS
und kann das 8.800 kg schwere Fahrzeug bei einer Nutzlast von 1.400 kg
auf 100 km/h beschleunigen. Durch die kompakten Abmessungen von 5,45
m Länge und 2,30 m Breite ist der Dingo sehr gut für Patrouillenfahrten in
kurvigem Gelände und engen Stadtgebieten geeignet.
The Biber (Beaver) bridge-laying tank, based on the chassis of the Leopard
1 main battle tank, was introduced to the troops in 1973. The bridge spans
were laid flat (free projecting front section), as compared with the previ-
ously used systems such as the folding or scissors bridge of the M48, offer-
ing a flat silhouette that did not advertise the presence of the bridge
assault over long distances. The Biber can bridge over a 20 meter obstacle
within 2-3 minutes and it does not take much longer to remove it. For
wider obstacles 2 bridges can be laid to overlap. The 2-man crew (driver
and commander) can control the whole procedure from the tank where
they remain well protected. The tank weighs approx. 45 tons complete,
about 10 tons being the bridges themselves. Due to the long period of
time it was in use it can be painted in different ways. Older vehicles and
bridges were painted in an all-over olive green. From 1984 onwards a
three-colour camouflage was introduced consisting of bitumen black,
leather brown and bronze green, and many bridges were also painted in
plain bronze green. During the transition period almost any colour combi-
nation was possible. Even now olive green spares are often issued by the
depots or taken from obsolete vehicles. Between 1973 and ’75, 105 Biber
bridge-layers and 124 aluminum quick-bridging units were procured. The
bridge is nominally rated up to 50 tons. In exceptional cases MLC 60 vehi-
cles can also use the bridges.
The Dingo 1 was procured to provide better protection for soldiers during
overseas missions in places such as Kosovo and Afghanistan. This vehicle
with great cross-country mobility is based on the chassis of the Unimog
and offers protection against infantry fire with armour-piercing projectiles
and artillery splinters. A V-shaped deflector on the underbody deflects the
explosion pressure of a mine round the bodywork and even offers the
crew inside protection against anti-tank mines. The Dingo can accommo-
date 5 soldiers and is equipped with air-conditioning, heating, tyre pressure
regulation, ABS, reversing camera, GPS navigation system and radio. The
roof-mounted gun can be operated from inside the armour and the mount
can be used for machine gun or automatic mortar. The engine of the
Unimog U1550 develops 240 hp and can accelerate the vehicle, weighing
8,800 kg and carrying a useful load of 1,400 kg, to 100 km/h. Due to its
compact dimensions - length 5.45 m and width 2.30 - the Dingo is equally
suitable for patrolling uneven terrain and narrow urban streets.
