Das Sd. Kfz. 9 - schwerer Zugkraftwagen 18 Tonnen - galt als
stärkste Zugmaschine der W
ehrmacht.
len Schussweiten betrugen 28 km (17 cm Kanone 18), bzw. 16,7
km (21 cm Mörser 18). Eine gut trainierte Bedienungs mann -
schaft konnte in etwa 1 Schuss alle 2 Minuten abfeuern.
The Sd. Kfz. 9 heavy 18 tonne prime mover is considered to be
the most powerful German Army towing vehicle. Between
1939 and 1944 about 2,500 of the final version were made at
the Fahrzeug- und Motorenwerken (FAMO) motor works in
Breslau and used for recovering tanks and transporting heavy
artillery. The 8.3 m long monster was powered by a 250 hp 12
cylinder Maybach engine. The “17 cm Kanone 18” cannon built
from 1942 and the “21 cm Mörser 18” heavy howitzer built
from 1939 were among the main guns used by the German
Army heavy artillery in the Second World War. The structure
consisted of an upper and a lower carriage with a dual recoil
system and a braked upper carriage. In order to bring the gun
into the firing position, the base plate was lowered and secu-
red to the ground with what were called earth spades in order
to absorb the enormous kickback when it was fired. The
wheels were also raised and the lower carriage was detached
from the limber. The pivot in the base plate made it possible to
rotate through 360 in the firing position. The maximum range
was 28 km (17 cm Kanone 18) or 16.7 km (21 cm Mörser 18). A
well trained crew could fire about 1 shot every 2 minutes. The
guns were grouped in units of three batteries with three guns
each. As a rule the gun was transported in two sections but for
a quick change of position it could also be towed in one piece
by a Sd. Kfz. 9 FAMO.
