Hawker Sea Hurricane Mk. II C Hawker Sea Hurricane Mk. II C
Die ersten 50 Sea Hurricane Mk.Is
in 6.705 m Höhe. Die Reichweite betrug 740 km. Flügelspannweite:
12,19 m. Länge: 9,84 m.
The Hawker Sea Hurricane was developed to meet the urgent require-
ment to provide protection against Luftwaffe attacks on North
Atlantic convoys. The first 50 Sea Hurricane Mk.Is (converted from
well-used RAF Hurricanes) were to be launched by rocket assisted cat-
apults from the bow of merchant ships when an enemy aircraft
approached the convoy. The pilot was then required to land at the
nearest airfield or ditch his aircraft ahead of the convoy and await res-
cue. A “Hurricat” from No.804 Naval Air Squadron achieved the first
successful interception when a Focke-Wulf Fw. 200 Condor was
destroyed on 3 August 1941. 35 merchant ships were converted to
launch Sea Hurricanes whilst still retaining their cargo capacity. It was
intended that two or more ships would be allocated to each convoy.
The more conventional Sea Hurricane Mk.IB, fitted with an arrester
hook, was also developed at this time for operation from the many
new small escort-carriers being built. The Sea Hurricane Mk.IB was
armed with eight 0.303in machine guns and was followed into service
by the Mk.IC armed with four 20mm cannon in the wings. The Sea
Hurricane Mk.IIC mated the cannon armament with a more powerful
Merlin XX engine. The introduction of the “hooked” Sea Hurricanes
allowed protection to be provided to convoys to North Africa, Russia
and the Mediterranean. By the end of 1943, most Sea Hurricanes had
been replaced by Seafires and other types. No.824NAS aboard HMS
Striker was the last unit to operate Sea Hurricanes, re-equipping with
Grumman Wildcats in April 1944. The 1,280hp Rolls-Royce Merlin XX
engine gave a maximum speed of 550km/h (342mph) at 6,705m
(22,000ft). Range was 740km (460 miles). Wingspan: 12.19m (40ft 0in.)
Length: 9.84m (32ft 3in.)
