Die Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet ist ein trägergestütztes
Jagd- und Angriffsflugzeug, das im Jahr 1999 bei der United
States Navy in Dienst gestellt wurde. Die F-Version ist die zwei-
sitzige Variante der F/A-18E. Obwohl die Grundkonzeption des
Flugzeugs und der Systeme dieselbe ist, bestehen doch große
Unterschiede zur vorherigen Version F/A-18C/D Hornet. Die
Tragflächen, das mittlere und hintere Rumpfteil, der Leitwerk -
bereich und die Triebwerke sind völlig neu. Die Tragflächen der
Super Hornet wurden um 25 % vergrößert. Der Rumpf wurde
verlängert, um die Treibstoffkapazität zu erhöhen und mehr
Platz für zukünftige Verbesserungen bei den Avionik-Syste -
men zu schaffen. Weitere Veränderungen umfassen eckige
Trieb werkseinlässe, zwei zusätzliche Außenlastträger sowie
Veränderungen, die die Aerodynamik verbessern. Letzten
Endes hat die Super Hornet im mittleren und hinteren Bereich
der Flugzeugzelle nur wenig mit den Vorgängerversionen der
F/A-18 gemein. Die Super Hornet wird informell auch als
„Rhino“ bezeichnet, um sie von den früheren „Legacy“ Hornets
zu unterscheiden.
Alle Squadrons der US Navy, die die F-14 Tomcat flogen, haben
auf die Super Hornet umgestellt. 12 Einsatzeinheiten der US
Navy (plus drei Test-Squadrons) nutzen die F/A-18F Super
Hornet Zweisitzer-Version, wobei jede Einheit standardmäßig
mit 12 Flugzeugen ausgerüstet ist.
The Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is a carrier-based fight-
er/attack aircraft that entered service in 1999 with the United
States Navy. The F-model is the twoseater variant of the F/A-
18E model. Despite the same general layout and systems, there
are many differences from the original F/A-18C/D Hornet. The
wing, center and aft fuselage, tail surfaces and power plants
are entirely new. The wing area of the Super Hornet is 25%
larger. The fuselage was stretched to carry more fuel and room
for future avionics upgrades. Other differences include angular
intakes for the engines, two extra wing hardpoints for pay-
load, and other aerodynamic changes. In the end, the Super
Hornet shared little with earlier F/A-18s aft of the forward
fuselage. The Super Hornet is informally referred to as the
„Rhino“ to distinguish it from earlier model „legacy“ Hornets.
All of the U.S. Navy’s F-14 Tomcat squadrons have converted to
the Super Hornet. 12 operational Navy squadrons (+3 test
squadrons) fly with the F/A-18F Super Hornet twoseater ver-
sion, each with a standard unit establishment of 12 aircraft.
