U.S.S. Kearsarge (LHD-3) U.S.S. Kearsarge (LHD-3)
Ende Mai
1997 evakuierte das Schiff Zivilisten aus Freetown, Sierra Leone. Nach dem Zyklon
Sidr leistete LHD-3 Hilfe in Bangladesh.

The U.S.S. Kearsarge (LHD-3) is a modern US Navy amphibious assault ship of the
Wasp Class. The ship was ordered in 1987 and the keel was laid by Ingalls
Shipbuilding at the beginning of 1990. At her launch the ship was already 70%
complete and was ready to go into service in October 1993. Due to her size – an
LHD (landing helicopter dock) equivalent to a World War II aircraft carrier – the
ship can carry up to 40 aircraft (helicopters and vertical take-off planes), various
landing craft and up to 1,894 US Marines. Normally they also carry V-22 Osprey
and AV-8B Harrier II aircraft as well as CH-53 helicopters. On board an extensive
storage and logistics system with cargo elevators and a horizontal monorail
transport network provides fast delivery of supplies to the upper deck and a
1,260 m well deck in the stern. The well deck can be flooded and is closed by 2
hydraulically operated doors. From here both hovercraft and conventional lan-
ding craft can leave the ship. On board an LHD there are also extensively
equipped medical facilities with six operating theatres and 600 hospital beds.
One of the first spectacular missions of LHD-3 was the rescue of a shot down air
force captain from the Bosnian theatre of war on 8th June 1995. At the end of
May 1997 the ship evacuated civilians from Freetown, Sierra Leone. After the Sidr
cyclone the LHD-3 provided aid in Bangladesh. In 2007 the ship was stationed off
Iraq for 6 months. In August 2008, the U.S.S. Kearsarge took part in an interna-
tional aid mission to seven Central American countries and was again in service
off Haiti after the tornadoes. At the beginning of March 2011, after the unrest
in Libya started, the LDH-3 transferred to the Mediterranean Sea.
