P-51C MUSTANG Mk.III P51C MUSTANG Mk.III
Der Jungfernflug des Prototyps der North American P-51
Mustang fand am 26. Oktober 1940 in Antwort auf eine briti-
sche Anfrage nach einem für die europäischen
Kriegsschauplätze geeigneten Jagdflugzeug statt. Die ersten
Mustang Mk.I trafen im November 1941 in England ein. Frühe
Kampferfahrungen zeigten eingeschränkte Geschwindigkeits-
und Höhenleistungen des ursprünglichen amerikanischen
Allison-Motors.
vorragende Rundumsicht erhielt. Die Mustang Mk.III war
bewaffnet mit vier 12,7 mm Browning-Maschinengewehren in
den Tragflächen und konnte außerdem zwei 225 kg-Bomben
anstelle der an den Tragflächen angebrachten Abwurftanks
tragen.
The prototype of the North American P-51 Mustang first flew
on 26 October 1940 in response to a British request for a fight-
er suitable for use in the European theatre. The first Mustang
Mk.I’s arrived in England in November 1941 and early combat
experience showed the speed and altitude limitations of the
original American designed Allison engine. Mustangs powered
by the Rolls-Royce Merlin 61, built by Packard in the United
States as the V-1650, were designated P-51B/C by the USAAF
and known as the Mustang Mk.III by the Royal Air Force.
Entering service with No.19 Squadron in February 1944 the first
version of the Merlin powered Mustang flew with a total of
nineteen RAF squadrons on long range escort and fighter-
bomber missions. Many aircraft were modified with the blown
Perspex rear sliding “Malcolm Hood” in place of the original
heavily framed hinged canopy giving outstanding all round vis-
ibility for the pilot. The Mustang Mk.III was armed with four
12.7 mm (0.5 in.) Browning machine guns in the wings and
could also carry two 225kg (500 lb) bombs in place of the wing
mounted drop tanks. Total P-51 production was over 15,500 of
which the P-51B/C version totalled 3,738 aircraft, 910 of these
being RAF Mustang IIIs. The Mustang Mk.III was powered by a
1520hp V-1650 (Merlin 61) giving a maximum speed of
711km/h (442mph) and an operational radius of 1529km (950
miles). Maximum altitude was 12,950m (42,500ft.) Wing span:
11.29m (37ft 1in.) Length: 9.83m (32ft 3in.) Height 4.17m (13ft
8in.)
