During “Operation Barbarossa” in the Soviet Union, in the first winter of
war in 1941, the German High Command realised that the traditional truck
was not suitable for the harsh Soviet climate and terrain. The vehicles often
got stuck in deep snow and needed to be recovered by battle tanks that
were thus unavailable for service at the front. In order to solve this prob-
lem, from 1942 the “Maultier” (mule) was developed. It was a variation of
a production truck on which the rear axle was replaced by a caterpillar
track. From 1943 onwards, several manufacturers supplied such a vehicle,
also known as a “half-track”. Based on the all-wheel drive L4500A,
Daimler-Benz made a half-track with the leaf-sprung tracked assembly of
the armoured fighting vehicle PzKpfw.II. The vehicle designated L4500R
had a load carrying capacity of 4.5 tonnes. By the end of the war about
1,400 had been built. The main role of the “Maultier” was to provide the
troops with weapons, supplies and munitions over difficult terrains.
However it could also be used to transport troops and guns.
