Die zweite Generation Chevrolet Corvette (1963 –1967) unterscheidet
sich deutlich von der vorherigen. Bill Mitchell stylt das Fahrzeug kom-
plett neu, wobei der Hobbyangler sich von Form und Farbe eines
Stachelrochens (=Sting Ray) inspirieren lässt. Der Wagen bietet jetzt
eine bessere Unterbringung von Fahrer und Beifahrer, eine noch bes-
sere Straßenlage und mehr Leistung. Das von Zora Arkus-Duntov
völlig überarbeitete Fahrwerk war ursprünglich für einen Viersitzer
gedacht und bietet somit eine beachtliche Steifheit und
Widerstandsfähigkeit. Doch vor Allem die aggressive Karosserie, im
Windtunnel des kalifornischen Institute of Technology entwickelt,
zeichnet die zweite Corvette-Generation aus. Erstmalig in der
Markengeschichte taucht neben dem Roadster auch eine
Coupéversion mit Fließheck im sportlichen Design auf. Markante
Merkmale der neuen Corvette finden sich in den versenkbaren
Frontscheinwerfern, den großen Türen und den Profilhöckern über
den Vorder- und Hinterrädern.
Obwohl es zu der Zeit in den USA durchaus üblich ist, Modellpflege als
das Hinzufügen von immer mehr Gimmicks an einem bestehenden
Fahrzeugtyp zu verstehen, beschreitet Chevrolet eindeutig andere
Wege. Unnutzer Zierrat verschwindet mit der Zeit. Der deutlichste
Wandel vollzieht sich jedoch bei der Motorisierung. Mit Blick auf den
Konkurrenten Ford setzt ein Prestige-Duell um immer mehr Kraft und
geringere Beschleunigungswerte ein. Der 6,5 Liter V8-Motor, 1965
zeitgleich mit den Scheibenbremsen an allen vier Rädern erschienen,
wird im Folgejahr schon auf 7,0 Liter vergrößert. Sieben verschiedene
Motoren stehen im Jahr 1967 zur Auswahl, wobei der im Modell vor-
zufindende L-71 Big-Block-Motor mit 427 cubic inch (= 7,0 Litern)
Hubraum 435 PS Leistung bietet und die Corvette in 4,7 Sekunden von
0 auf 100 km/h beschleunigt. Die Leistungswerte, die sagenhafte
Karosserie der Corvette C2, eine der originellsten Kreationen im US-
Fahrzeugbau überhaupt, sowie die beachtlichen Fahreigenschaften
des Wagens begründen letztlich den legendären Ruf, den die Corvette
Fahrzeuge noch heute innehaben.
The second generation of the Chevrolet Corvette (1963 –1967) signifi-
cantly differs from the previous one. Bill Mitchell completely restyles
the entire car and, being a keen angler, allows himself to be inspired
by the shape and colour of a sting ray. The vehicle now offers much
better accommodation facilities for both the driver and co-driver, cou-
pled with improved road holding and a more powerful performance.
The chassis, completely modified by Zora Arkus-Duntov, was originally
intended for a 4-seater and therefore offers incredible rigidity and resi-
stance. However, the second Corvette generation is characterized
above all by its aggressive bodywork, designed in the wind tunnel of
the Californian Institute of Technology. And for the first time in the
brand’s history, also a convertible with fast-back in a highly sporty
design emerges alongside the roadster version. Outstanding features
of the new Corvette are the retractable headlights, the large doors
and the profile humps above the front and rear wheels.
Although at that time in the USA it is entirely normal to just add more
and more gimmicks to the existing type and call it a successor,
Chevrolet clearly chooses to go down a different route. In time all
unnecessary embellishments disappear. But the engine sees the most
significant change. With a keen eye on its rival, Ford, a duel of prestige
ensues in a race to increase the output and reduce the acceleration
values. The 6.5 litre V8 engine, launched in 1965 at the same time as
the four-wheel disc brakes, is increased to 7.0 litres capacity in the year
following. In 1967, there are seven different engines to choose from.
The L-71 big-block engine with a capacity of 427 cubic inches (i.e. 7.0
litres) and delivering 435 hp, allows the Corvette to accelerate from 0
to 100 km/h in all of 4.7 seconds. These performance values and the
fabulous bodywork of the Corvette C2 - one of the most extravagant
creations ever to be produced by the US car industry - together with
the extraordinary driving properties, ultimately explain the legendary
reputation that the Corvette cars still enjoy today.
