waren 300 SL.
The predecessor of this car, the R 107, had been in the range for all of 18
years, when in 1989 Mercedes started a technical and visual offensive.
Originally – in 1955 – the roadster in the Mercedes range was a lightly
disguised racing car, but the new R 129 was based on the S Class. It was
aimed at the “gentleman driver”. So the new roadsters and saloons had
more electronics and electrical aids than any previous SL. The engines
were electronically controlled; they had ESP and ABS, which actually
made them sporty to drive. In addition to a fully automatic damping system
the seat belts were also integrated into the seats. The seats moved
backwards and forwards electronically and in the open top version the roof
was opened and closed by electric motors and disappeared without trace
behind the seats. The Mercedes received an anti-roll bar that came out in
0.3 seconds to protect the passengers in the event of a rollover. The
fascinating sports car combined performance, safety, pleasure and
comfort to a degree that no other car of its time could offer. In addition it
had the elegant appearance of bodywork styled with Italian flair by Bruno
Sacco combined with German reliability. The bodywork with its smooth
lines was more elegant and attractive than that of its predecessors.
This major onslaught on enthusiastic drivers had its price. In 1989
Mercedes asked all of 102,200 DM for this model. But shortly after its
appearance impatient buyers were offering up to 50,000 DM more than the
current purchase price. By comparison, a VW Golf II then cost about
20,000 DM depending on the fittings.
A variety of engines originating from the S Class saloon range ensured a
thoroughly enjoyable drive. The lively 6-cylinder engine of the 300 SL-24
coupé, which was also available from 1989, with a capacity of 2,960 cc
and four-valve technology delivered 231 bhp (170 kW) with a top speed of
240 km/h. Nevertheless, driving this top-of-the range car always remained
a relaxing experience. This was assured by the body-contoured seats
supplied as standard and the refined heating and air conditioning
technology. Mercedes 300 SL models are still popular and in demand
today. In the years from 1989 to 2001 Mercedes built a total of 204,940
examples of the R 129, of which 39,004 were the 300 SL model.
