U.S.S. Nimitz (CVN-68) U.S.S. Nimitz (CVN-68)
Die U.S.S. Nimitz wurde 1967 als zweiter nuklear angetriebener Flugzeugträger
nach der U.S.S. Enterprise in Auftrag gegeben. Am 13. Mai 1972 in
Mai 1975 in Dienst.
Dienst gestellt.

In 1967 an order was placed for the U.S.S. Nimitz a second nuclear-powered air-
craft carrier following the U.S.S. Enterprise. Launched in Newport / Virginia on 13
May 1972, she went into service on 3 May 1975 at a cost of $ 6 billion-dollar by
today’s standards. Mainly stationed in the Mediterranean Sea until 1987 the car-
rier is now stationed at the Everett Naval Station on the Northwest coast of the
U.S. and operates in the Pacific and the Indian Oceans. The ships first major oper-
ational deployment was during the 2nd Gulf War in 1991. This was followed by
„Operation Iraqi Freedom“ in 2003, during which more than 6500 combat mis-
sions were flown. The Nimitz was modernised and refurbished by the manufac-
turer - Newport News Shipbuilding - between 1998 and 2001. After 25 years of
operation the nuclear fuel rods of a Nimitz class carrier are renewed during a
„Refuelling and Complex Overhaul“. Another overhaul costing 239 million USD
began in late 2010.
Starting with the U.S.S. „Dwight D. Eisenhower“, the U.S. Navy put a further nine
Nimitz Class carriers named after U.S. Presidents into service between 1977 and
2009. The planned operating life of a carrier is 50 years. The annual maintenance
costs of each ship will lie at about US$ 300 million. At sea each carrier is accom-
panied by a „Carrier Strike Group“, which as well as a supply ship has three to
five destroyers, a frigate, and two submarines. The Group has a range of around
5000 Nautical Miles. Thanks to its nuclear drive and the extensive supply and
storage capacity, a Nimitz Class carrier can quickly deploy over long distances and
stay on station in a crisis area for many months.
