Working withapartner,onein thelisteningposionandone attheRELmanipulang thecontrols, isthe

mosteﬀecveand eﬃcientwayto setupthe REL.Ifworkingalone, theinialstepsintheset-upcan bevery

eﬀecvelycarriedoutfromthelocaonofthe REL.Tryingto ignore allothermusicin thetrack,listenfor

thebassdrum anditseﬀecton thelisteningroom.

Phase Orientaon:Onceinthecorner phasecanbeadjusted.This may bethe singlemostcrical step,and

becauseit reallyisquite simple,itisoen over-thought.Keepin mind;therightphaseis whicheverposion

istheloudest orfullest.Whileplayingmusic withtruelow bass,adjustthecrossoverto apointwherethe

RELandthe speakeraresuretosharefrequencies(abouthalfwayup,or at12o’clockonthe crossover

control,orslightly higherfor smallerspeakers).Atthis pointturn theHI/LOW LEVELcontrol upsothatboth

theRELand speakerareroughlyequal involumeand thenswitch,using thephaseswitch,from“0”to “180”

phaseposions.Again,whicheverposionis loudestorfullestisthe correct posion.Thatis, whenthe

posionisworking inharmonywith yourmain speakers,reinforcingbass,notcancelling it.

Placement:Thenextstepisto determinepreciselyhow farfromthecorner thesubshould beplaced

toachievethemosteﬃcientoutput,aswell asthelowestfrequencyextension. WiththeREL fullyintothe

corner,and poinngstraightout alongthediagonal comingout ofthecorner,connuingto play themusic,

slowlypull theRELfromthecorneronthe diagonal,equidistant from bothsideandrearwall. At acertain

point(somemesamaerof onlyafewinches, inrare cases afoot ormore)theREL willaudibly go lower,

playlouder,and, ifittrulylocks ontotheroomandis fullypressurizingit, theairaroundtheREL willseem

tobeenergized, stoprightthere!Thisis thecorrectposionfromthecorner fortheREL.

Crossover andLevelSengs:To determine thecrossoverpoint,takethevolume oftheREL (usingthe

HI/LOWLEVELcontrol)allthewaydown,andputthecrossoverto 30Hz.Atthispoint,bringtheREL’svolume

backupslowly tothepointwhereyouhaveachieved asubtlebalance, i.e.thepointatwhichyou canhear

theRELeven withthe mainspeakersplaying.Now,bring thecrossoverpoint upunlit isobviouslytoo

high;at thispoint bringit downto theappropriatelowerseng. For allintents andpurposes,thisis the

correctcrossoverpoint.Once thisstagehasbeen reached, subtlechanges tovolume andcrossovercan be

accomplishedtoprovidethelastbit ofcomplete andseamlessintegraon.Withthat, set-up iscomplete.
