GLOSSARY AND INDEX
(Explanation of the most important technical terms)
2D/3D GPS tracking:
The GPS receiver uses satellite signals to track its (your) position. Depending on the current
position of the orbiting satellites in the sky and the objects located around you, the received
signal will be strong or weak. Your GPS unit requires strong signals from at least four satellites
to be able to calculate your position in three dimensions (including elevation). When only three
satellites are visible, position tracking is still possible, but the accuracy will be lower and no
elevation can be determined. This is called 2D tracking. The signal quality is shown in the
Navigation Main menu, the GPS data display and the two map displays of the navigation
device. 2D or 3D tracking does not influence the map display modes. The display mode is a way
to represent maps that does not depend on the GPS reception.
Accuracy at current position:
The difference between your real position and the position determined by GPS is affected by
several factors. You GPS receiver can estimate the error based on the number and position of
the satellites emitting the signals. This information is displayed on the GPS data display of your
device. A smaller value indicates a higher accuracy. An accuracy of 1.0 is the optimum. This will
be the reference value. Please note that the GPS accuracy depends on some additional factors
that cannot be corrected by your GPS receiver (signal delay through ionospheric effects,
reflective materials next to the GPS device, etc.).
Active route:
This route is an itinerary planned to reach the desired destinations. A route is called active when
used for navigation. Thus, the program will only have one single navigation route that will
remain active until you delete it, you reach your destination or you exit the program. If you want
to go to more than one destination, the route will be segmented (from one waypoint to the next
waypoint). Only one of these route segments can be active at any one time. The other
segments will remain inactive and are represented by a different colour on the map.
Automatic day and night colours:
MyGuide can calculate sunrise and sunset based on the local time and geographic coordinates.
Based on this information, the system will toggle from daylight to night colours a few minutes
after sunset and back to daylight colours prior to sunrise.
To improve the orientation, the 3D map view will also show the sun's position in the sky when
selecting a lower virtual height.
Automatic route planning:
(Autorouting): You simply need to specify your destination and the program will determine the
most suitable roads and road intersections to reach it, based on the built-in maps. MyGuide
offers different possibilities to select the destination as well as several route planning
parameters.
