Bij draadloze telefoons wordt een geluidssignaal vanuit

het basisstation naar de handset gezonden. Binnen het

bereik van de telefoons kan bijvoorbeeld worden gezocht

naar toestellen die kwijt zijn geraakt.

Afkorting voor persoonlijk identificatienummer. Dient ter

beveiliging tegen onbevoegd gebruik.

R-toets

Telefoons die zijn uitgerust met de R-toets

(ruggespraaktoets), zijn tevens geschikt voor aansluiting

aan telecommunicatie-installaties. Bij moderne telefoons

wordt met de R-toets de Hook-Flash-functie geactiveerd:

De verbinding wordt gedurende 170 - 310 ms

onderbroken, wat voor de telefooncentrale een teken is,

dat de navolgende kiestonen (DTMF) commando's

voorstellen i.p.v. cijfers van een telefoonnummer. Deze

voorziening is nodig om gebruik te kunnen maken van

extra functies zoals ruggespraak of telefonisch

vergaderen met minstens twee externe deelnemers.

sms - short message service

Dit is een functie voor het overdragen van tekstberichten.

Deze techniek is oorspronkelijk ontwikkeld voor mobiele

telefoons (GMS), maar is inmiddels ook in het vaste net

beschikbaar.

De eerste 'short message' (kort bericht) volgens het sms-

protocol werd in december 1992 vanaf een pc verstuurd
