1. POWER SWITCH
ThisistheOn/Offswitchformainspowertotheamplifier.Itwilllightupwhen
youramplifierisreceivingthecorrectmainspowerandisswitchedon.Itwillnot
belitwhentheamplifierisswitchedoffand/orisnotreceivingmainspower.
Note: Pleaseensuretheamplifierisswitchedoffandunpluggedfromthemains
electricitysupplywheneveritismoved.
2. STANDBY SWITCH
TheStandbySwitchisusedinconjunctionwiththePowerSwitch(item1)towarm
uptheamplifierbeforeuseandtoprolongthelifeoftheoutputvalves.When
poweringuptheamplifieralwaysengagethePowerSwitchfirst,leavingthe
StandbyswitchonStandby.Thisallowstheapplicationofthevoltagerequired
toheatthevalvestotheircorrectoperatingtemperature.Afterapproximatelytwo
minutesthevalveswillhavereachedthecorrectoperatingtemperatureandthe
StandbySwitchcanbeengaged.Inordertoprolongvalvelife,theStandby
Switchaloneshouldalsobeusedtoturntheamplifieronandoffduringbreaksin
aperformance.Also,whenswitchingoff,alwaysdisengagetheStandbySwitch
priortothemainPowerSwitch.
Note: Thefollowingfourcontrols-PRESENCE(4),BASS(5),MIDDLE(6)&
TREBLE(7)-areallshared,meaningthattheyallworkonbothChannelIand
ChannelII.TheTreble,MiddleandBasscontrolsarehighlyinteractiveand
alteringonecontrolcanchangethewaytheothertwobehave.Forthisreason,
experimentationisrecommended.

3. PRESENCE CONTROL
Thiscontroloperatesinthe1959RRspowersectionandaddshighfrequenciesto
yoursoundbyalteringthepoweramplifiersnegativefeedback.Turningthis
controlclockwiseaddsmoreedgeandsparkletoyoursound,makingitcrisper
andmorecutting.
4. BASS CONTROL
Thisadjuststhebottomend,turningitclockwiseincreasestheamountoflow
frequenciesinthesound.
5. MIDDLE CONTROL
Thisadjuststhelevelofthoseall-importantmid-rangefrequencies.Turningit
clockwiseincreasesthemidsandfattensyoursound,givingitmorepunch.
Turningitanticlockwisereducesthemids.
6. TREBLE CONTROL
Thisadjuststhetop-end.Turningitclockwiseincreasestheamountofhigh
frequencies(treble)presentinthesound,makingyourtonebrighter.
Tone/Tech talk - The modified Valve 1 stage
UnlikeastandardMarshall1959SuperLeadamplifieryourRandyRhoads
modelcontainsamodificationthatincreasesgainandthereforeextradistortion
withinthecircuit.Thismodificationhotrodstheamplifiermakingiteasiertopush
itintothesaturationlevelsnecessaryforthesoundthatRandyneededforhis
musicalstation.
Thechangeisverysimplebuteffectiveandinvolvescascading(feedingthe
outputofthefirststageintotheinputofthesecondstage)thetwohalvesof
valve1.Traditionally,eachhalfwouldserveasinputbuffer/firstgainstageforthe
twochannels,i.e.onehalfforchannel1andtheotherforchannel2,fromthere
theywouldseparatelyfeedtherespectivesignalstothenextstagewhichwould
mixthem,furtheramplifythemandfeedthemtothetonestack.
Cascadingvalve1resultsintheguitarsignalbeingincreasedbyaround36dBor
60times,muchlargerthanitwouldnormallybeatthispointinthecircuit.
Subsequentstagesthentrytoamplifythislargersignalbysimilaramountsand
quicklyrunoutofheadroomcausingthewaveformtodistortseverely.Thetwo
channelvolumesstillremainfunctionalafterthemodificationbutadoptdifferent
rolesfortheiraffectonthetone,allowingcontroloftheextragainandvolume.
Pluggingintochannel2routestheguitarsignalthroughthewholecascadecircuit
whilepluggingintochannel1allowsyoutobypassthecascadeandusetheamp
initsstandardformatwhere‘Volume1willfunctionasitnormallywould.
StandardChannel2formatissacrificedduetothemodification.
7. VOLUME I
ThiscontrolstheoveralloutputlevelofChannelI,turningitclockwiseincreasesthe
volume.Thischannelisvoicedforahighertrebleresponse.Infullcascademode,
thiscontrolstheamountofsignalamplifiedbythesecondhalf ofvalve1,thereby
actingasacrudemastervolumeforthewholecascadecircuitandcanalsobe
thoughtofasafurthergaincontrolfortheboostedsignaltothesubsequent
stagesofthepreamp.Instandardmodei.e.guitarpluggedintochannel1,it
functionsjustlikeanormalunmodified1959SuperLeadvolumecontrol.
8. VOLUME II
Fullcascademode.Thiscontrolstheamountofsignalamplifiedbythefirsthalfof
valve1thatisfedtothesecondhalf,therebyactingasagaincontrolforthe
cascadecircuititself.
9. HIGH SENSITIVITY INPUT FOR CHANNEL I
ThisisthehighsensitivityguitarinputforChannelI-thebrighterofthetwo
channels-andisthemostcommonlyusedinputonstandardunmodifiedmodels.
Alwaysuseahighqualityscreenedguitarlead.NOTE-Pluggingintothisinput
bypassesthecascadeandtheampfunctionsinstandardformat.
10. LOW SENSITIVITY INPUT FOR CHANNEL I
ThisisthelowsensitivityguitarinputforChannelI.Itis6dBlower(half)thanthe
highsensitivityinputandresultsinlessgaincapabilitywhichmayberequiredfor
guitarswithveryhotoutputpickupsoractivecircuitryonboard.NOTE-Plugging
intothisinputalsobypassesthecascadeandtheampfunctionsinstandardformat.
