Information about the prototype
As early as 1967 the Swedish State Railways (SJ) acquired in the
Rc1 electric locomotive their first regular production locomotive
class equipped with thyristor control. Starting in 1969 came the
improved, lighter in weight class Rc2 and in 1970 the faster Rc3,
starting in 1975 the Rc4 with modest changes in the frame and
with wheel slip control. New motors and larger roof vents were
applied to the Rc5 starting in 1982 and the still faster Rc6 starting
in 1985.
The basic design, body and driving gear dimensions has
remained almost the same with all of these units, including the
4 ASEA motors’ total output of 4,828 horsepower. The maximum
permissible speed is 135 km/h / 84 mph, 160 km/h / 100 mph for
the faster versions. The total weight has changed from 80 metric
tons to 76.8 metric tons and finally 78 metric tons.

Avec la locomotive Rc1, les Chemins de fer Suédois (SJ) inau-
guraient, déjà en 1967, la première série de machines équipées
en série de la régulation par thyristors. A partir de 1969, on a
vu apparaître la série Rc2, plus légère et améliorée et, en 1970,
la série Rc3 plus rapide encore. Enfin, en 1975, naissait la série
Rc4 légèrement modifiée au niveau du châssis avec système
d’antipatinage.
A partir de 1985 sortaient la série Rc5 équipée de
nouveaux moteurs et de plus gros ventilateurs de toiture ainsi que
la série Rc6 plus rapide encore que les précédentes.
La construction de base, les dimensions de la caisse et du
châssis ainsi que le design sont restés à peu identiques sur toutes
les locomotives. De même, la puissance des 4 moteurs ASEA,
équivalente à 3 600 kW, est restée inchangée. La vitesse maxima-
le autorisée atteint 135 km/h mais, sur les versions plus rapides,
elle peut atteindre 160 km/h. Le poids total est passé de 80 t à 76,8
pour atteindre finalement 78 t.
