The beam bridge is the most basic bridge type. It is

made of a horizontal beam resting on piers at each

end, like a wooden plank lying across two logs.

Beam bridges do not span long distances.

The reason for this is that they are weak in the

center. The piers support the weight of the bridge

and any trafﬁc on it. The Lake Pontchartrain

Causeway in Louisiana is an exception to this.

This is a series of beam bridges connected together

for more than 23 miles (37 km). Adding piers close

together and shortening the span between them

makes a beam bridge longer and able to carry a

heavy load.
