The drill bit on the hand drill is
a screw. A screw is a rod with
an inclined plane spiraled
around it, called threads.
When you drill into a piece of wood, the drill bit’s
sharp blades cut into the wood. The distance around
the screw’s threads is much longer than the screw
itself. The bit travels around and around, working its
way deeper into the wood and pushing out the
shavings as it goes. This takes less eort to make
a hole than pounding a nail straight into the wood.
