SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
1. It is vital to know how to stop the generating set quickly and to know how to use
all the controls. Never allow anyone not familiar with the instructions to use the
generating set.
2. Do not allow children under fourteen years of age or animals to approach the
generating set when it is in operation.
3. Before starting the generating set, always carry out pre-operational checks in
order to avoid accidents or damage to the equipment.
4. Site the generating set at least 1 metre from buildings or other equipment when it
is in use.
5. Do not run the engine in a confined area; the exhaust gases contain carbon
monoxide, which is a lethal, odourless gas. Ensure that there is adequate
ventilation.
When the generator is installed in a ventilated room, additional requirements for
fire and explosion protection shall be observed.
6. The generating set should be used on a horizontal surface. Petrol spillage might
result if the generating set is not level.
7. Petrol is a highly flammable substance which can explode under certain
conditions. Store fuel in containers specially designed for this purpose. Do not
keep petrol, or the machine when it contains petrol, in a dangerous place. Do not
smoke when handling fuel, and do not allow naked flames near the generating set.
Fill up with fuel in a well ventilated area. Never open the fuel tank when the engine
is running or still hot. If petrol has been spilt, move the machine and wait for the
petrol to evaporate and for all vapour to dissipate before starting the engine. After
using the generating set, close the fuel valve. Avoid any repeated or prolonged
contact of petrol with the skin as well as any inhalation of petrol vapour.
8. Do not touch rotating parts, the spark plug lead or the muffler when the generating
set is in operation.
Some parts of the internal combustion engine are hot and may cause burns. Pay
attention to the warnings on the generating set.
9. A generating set can cause electrocution when not used correctly; do not handle
it with wet hands.
Do not get the generating set wet or use it in the rain or snow.
10. If the generating set is to be connected to the mains network of a building to
provide a back-up electricity supply, this should always be carried out by a
qualified electrician in accordance with all laws and regulations in force for
electrical installations. An incorrect connection can cause reverse electric current
from the generating set to flow through the public supply, resulting in the
electrocution of anyone working on the mains network. Moreover, the generating
set could explode, catch fire, or cause a fire to start in the wiring of the building
once the mains supply has been re-established.
Electrical equipment (including lines and plug connections) should not be
defective.
11. Instructions for use relating to the safety of persons are given in the chapter
entitled “GENERATING SET USE” in this manual. It is essential to refer to those
instructions.
