DRIVING IN THE MOUNTAINS
Here is some advice for driving in the
mountains:
use the engine brake when travelling
downhill in order to prevent over-
heating the brakes;
never coast downhill with the engine
off, in neutral or with the ignition key
extracted;
drive at a moderate speed and avoid
“cutting” corners;
remember that overtaking uphill takes
longer and therefore requires more
road space: if you are being overtaken
uphill, assist the other vehicle.
DRIVING ON SNOW
AND ON ICE
Here is some advice for driving in these
conditions:
maintain a moderate speed;
use winter tyres or snow chains on
snow covered roads;
mainly use engine braking and avoid
sharp braking;
avoid sudden acceleration and sharp
changes in direction;
in winter, even apparently dry roads
may have icy patches: take care on
sections of road not exposed to the
sun, shaded by trees or rocks at the
side, where ice may persist;
always keep a safe distance from the
vehicles in front.
DRIVING WITH ABS
The following is recommended to opti-
mise the braking action of the ABS sys-
tem:
during emergency braking or in poor
grip conditions, you may notice a
slight pulsation on the brake pedal: it
is the intervention of the ABS; do not
take your foot off the pedal, but con-
tinue pressing it for a continuous
braking action;
ABS prevents the wheels from lock-
ing, but does not increase the physical
limits of the grip between the tyres
and the road therefore, even if the ve-
hicle is equipped with ABS, always
maintain a safe distance from the ve-
hicles in front and slow down into
bends.
ABS is designed to improve the control of
the car, not to allow you to drive faster.
