When fitting the Elicia Switch Hob flush into a worktop can the expansion gap in the granite worktop be filled with silicone sealant? This will prevent crumbs from getting into the expansion gap

We have the Nikolatesla switch recirculating model hob. How do we activate the timer function? I have read the manual and followed the instructions. With a pot on the cooking zone I switch on the power and try to select the + - control but nothing happens. I have tried it with the cooking zone power at 0 and also with power set to >0 but neither works.
