OPMERKING VOOR DE ARTS:
Acute blootstelling door inslikken of inhalatie van hoge concentraties produceert effecten die pas 40 minuten tot
72
uren later kunnen optreden. De symptomen blijven gewoonlijk beperkt tot het ZNS, de ogen en het maag-
darmkanaal. De eerste ZNS-symptomen zoals hoofdpijn, duizeligheid, slaperigheid en verwardheid kunnen de
indruk geven dat het hier om een ethanolvergiftiging handelt. Wazig zicht, verminderd gezichtsvermogen en
fotofobie zijn gebruikelijke klachten bij methanolvergiftiging. Behandeling met ipecac of maagspoeling is
aangewezen wanneer de patient binnen twee uren na het inslikken de klinische symptomen vertoont. Bij
ernstige intoxicatie-gevallen treedt een hoge metabolische acidose op; het serum-bicarbonaatgehalte biedt hier
meer nauwkeurigheid omtrent de ernstigheid dan het serum-methanolgehalte. De meeste grote hospitalen
beschikken over behandelingsprotocollen in verband met methanolintoxicaties. Het is aanbevolen om met
dergelijke instellingen zo snel mogelijk samen te werken.
