Choosing th e right tire s
Choose th e best available highest bite tire fo r th e re a r of th e car and th e n balance th e car with th e
fro n t tire s. If th e car pushes or u n d e rste e rs th e n fit fro n t tire s with more grip (so fte r). If th e car
oversteers or hooks th e n fit fro n t tire s with le ss grip (h a rd e r).
Choosing th e right tire diam eter
W hen a tire is new and has a large diam eter it will pr
ovide more grip th a n th e sa m e tire when it has
worn dow n and has a sm all diam eter. Rem em ber th e fo llow ing:
- Larger tire s have more rolling re sistan ce then sm a ller tire s.
- Smaller tire s are not so good over bum ps as larger tire s.
- W hen more ste e ring is re q u ire d use sm a ller re a r tire s or larger front tire s.
- W hen less stee ring is re q u ire
d use larger re a r tire s or sm a ller fro n t tire s.
Tire additive
Once th e correct tire s have been se lected, you have experience of th e best ways to treat th e m and
what th e different diam eter achieve, you can fine tu n e th e car by adjusting th e am ount of additive
used on th e fro n t tire s. Always apply th e additive a cro ss th e fu ll width of th e re a r tire s and on the
inside of th e fro n t tire s. Ensure th at you tre at each fro n t tire exactly th e sam e am ount. The more
stee ring you need, th
e more additive you use on your fro n t tire s.
* Repeated use of th e sa m e se t of tire s with additive can make th e m very so ft. These tire s can easily
be dam aged, th e y wear more quickly and have higher ro lling re sistan ce. The best so lution is to have
se ve ral se ts of th e sam e com pound of tire . You can th e n rota te th e se se ts of tire s to prevent
prem ature so fte n ing and th e y will give lon
ger overall life .
Gear ratio charts
As it is often necessary to change tire s and tire sizes to get th e car dialled into the track, it is
therefore important th a t you know exactly what effect th e se tire size changes will have on th e gear
ra tio. The fo llow ing gear ra tio ch a rts equate motor gear ra tios into linear distan ce tra ve lled along
th e tra ck per re v o lution of th e motor and by doing so ta ke into consid
e ra tion th e tire size used.
How to use th e se charts.
Measure your re a r tire s, find th e chart fo r th e tire size, line up th e appropriate pinion and sp u r gears
used and th e chart will th e n sh o w you th e mm/rev trave lled.
- The higher the num ber th e fu rth e r th e car will trave l per m o to r re vo lution, meaning its geared
higher th a n a low er figure.
- Smaller pinion
s mean low er mm/rev se ttings and larger pinions mean higher se ttings.
- Smaller sp u r gears mean higher mm/rev se ttings and larger sp u r gears mean low er se ttings.
- Higher se ttings mean higher to p speed (u sing more battery energy).
- Lower se ttings mean le ss to p sp e e d but more acceleration (u sing less battery energy).
- A to o high gear ra tio se tting might dam age your motor and cause excessive brush and
com m utator wear.
