Δεν έχουν όλα τα άτομα που βρίσκονται στην περιοχή του υπερβολικού βάρους αυτόματα αυξημένο
κίνδυνο ασθένειας.

Για τα άτομα που βρίσκονται στην περιοχή του υπερβολικού βάρους πρέπει να χρησιμοποιηθούν
και άλλες παράμετροι, όπως η περίμετρος της μέσης. Διότι δεν χρησιμοποιείται ως κατευθυντήρια
γραμμή μόνο ο BMI, αλλά και η κατανομή του αποθέματος λίπους διαδραματίζει αποφασιστικό ρόλο.
Έρευνες έχουν δείξει ότι ο κίνδυνος για την υγεία είναι υψηλότερος όσο μεγαλύτερη είναι η κατανομή
του λίπους στον κορμό και στην κοιλιά. Κατευθυντήρια τιμή είναι η περίμετρος της μέσης, που
μετράται μεταξύ του κάτω άκρου του πλευρικού τόξου και του άνω άκρου της λαγονίου ακρολοφίας.
Αυξημένος κίνδυνος υπάρχει στους άνδρες με περίμετρο μέσης από >94 cm,
στης γυναίκες από >80 cm.
